on display, room 011 About the workOne of the best-known representatives of the Düsseldorf School of Painting, Oswald Achenbach travelled to Italy seven times between 1845 and 1895. He found inspiration there for his landscape images, in which he staged realistically rendered architectural motifs “naturally” with the help of staffage figures and a sophisticated use of light. He presents the evening atmosphere at the harbour with Mount Vesuvius in the background. The artist has successfully transferred the lighting effects that govern the ambiance of his paintings to the medium of print.
