About the workElisabeth Jerichau-Baumann studied privately in Düsseldorf and became one of the most successful German woman painters of her time. She grew up in Warsaw and was a sought-after portrait artist. This picture was completed in Rome, where she married the sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau, whom she later followed to Denmark. Levin Schücking was a widely read Westphalian writer who spent some time in Rome as a correspondent for the “Kölnische Zeitung”. His friend, the writer Ferdinand Freiligrath, described his bright eyes as “ghost eyes”.
