About the workAn ornamental arch populated with figures spans this view of the Lorelei slate rock. According to a nineteenth-century legend, Lorelei was a siren who would sit on this rock and comb her golden hair, confounding sailors with her song and causing them to crash their boats against the rock. Here she is playing the harp. To her right and left is a banner with the beginning of Heinrich Heine’s famous “Lorelei” poem. Caspar Scheuren’s print unites art and literature – just like the name of the luxury volume in which it featured, which was published in 1855.
