About the workUnderneath an ornamental arch crowned by personifications of war and peace, the “limping messenger” leans against a tree trunk. A war invalid with a prosthetic lower leg, he is listened to by young and old alike. From 1882 to 1899, Caspar Scheuren’s motif was used as the title page for the “Great Almanac of the Lahr Limping Messenger”, which was initially compiled by the folk writer and engineer Albert Bürklin. The publisher was Moritz Schauenburg, who had trained in the book trade in Essen. Scheuren worked with him on a number of occasions.
