About the workThe Renaissance artist Raphael was revered as a “divine” painter even during his own lifetime. In the eighteenth century, art enthusiasts saw the expression of his outstanding genius in every one of his drawings. It was a stroke of luck that the collector Lambert Krahe was able to acquire this print at an auction in The Hague in 1760 – both for him and for the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, founded in 1773, since he became its first director and his collection passed into its possession. The drawing is a study for a fresco in the Vatican depicting the coronation of Charlemagne.
