Marbled "calcedonio" (chalcedony or agate imitation) glass, blown into a ribbed mold, partly gilt silver mounts, applied after foot and lid were damaged. The finial of the original glass lid was mounted into the silver lid

About the workThe creation of marbled glass is subject to chance: it changes constantly when hot, leaving little time to blow the vessel. The shape of the pitcher exhibits medieval traits, but its production coincided with a period of change. After Europe had been paralysed by a plague pandemic for about 100 years, a new heyday dawned around 1450. In Venice there was a revival of glass art, of which this pitcher is a very rare example. The silver-gilt mounts probably date from the nineteenth century.
