About the workAlthough the Rhenish artist Adolf Uzarski did not fight as a soldier in the First World War, its events left a deep impression on him. He produced numerous prints which portray the war’s consequences. He often drew on traditional “Danse Macabre” scenes, in which Death, usually depicted as a skeleton, calls people to their final dance. Uzarski shows Death as an everyday companion haunting the soldiers at the front and driving those left behind to suicide. These prints become a symbol of a society on the brink.
