About the workThe shepherd is playing the shawm, a kind of wooden flute whose sound is supposed to create harmony between soul and cosmos. Ludwig Richter chose an idyllic scene as the motif for this watercolour pen and ink drawing. The artist, who was also a popular fairy-tale illustrator, gave up oil painting in 1859 and concentrated on his graphic work from then on. He occasionally made reproductions of his own drawings. There are three known copies of the “Abendlied” (Evening Song).
