Zodiac signs and seasons, ca. 1850
Watercolour, pen, heightened with white and gold
Sheet dimensions27,5 × 37 cm
About the workFour elfin beings are arranged above an outstretched swallowtail butterfly, which can reproduce up to four generations a year in warmer regions. They and their accompaniments embody the four seasons. The scenes above them continue this theme: a park landscape with a poet represents spring, the grain crop stands for summer, the grape harvest and dancing for autumn, while a snowy landscape suggests winter. The signs of the Zodiac are depicted on the outer edge of the fan.
