About the workIn 1825, the graphic artist Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder, known as “Eichen-Kolbe” (Oak Kolbe), wrote that it was trees that had made him an artist. They are repeatedly the main protagonists of his landscape etchings. Having initially worked as a French teacher, he only moved to Berlin at the age of 30 in order to study at the Academy, where he specialised in printmaking. In 1798, the prince of Anhalt appointed Kolbe to his court as a copperplate engraver.
