About the workMaking light visible is a central theme of Adolf Luther’s works. The circular concave mirrors that he layered on a wall of the Creamcheese bar not only reflected the space, but also the light. This shone on the guests in the venue, as well as on all the particles of dust in the air and – in the era before the smoking ban – cigarette smoke. The artist referred to the rays rendered visible in this way as “Vor-Bilder” (Pre-Images), as they diffused through the space in front of the mirrors. Born in Krefeld, Luther had a long career as a judge before turning to art in 1957.
