About the workThis painting was acquired as part of a multilateral exchange in 1938/39. This involved Düsseldorf’s municipal art collection entrusting a picture by Edvard Munch to the dealer Hildebrandt Gurlitt, who sold it on to Oslo. Modern artists like the Norwegian painter were denounced by the National Socialists as “degenerate”. Gurlitt used the proceeds to acquire a work by Anton Mirou, a seventeenth-century Flemish painter, which he passed on to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn. At that time, its collection focused on Rhenish and Dutch Old Masters. As no more suitable works were consigned to the museum, this portrait of a boy by the Swiss artist Samuel Hofmann was transferred from Bonn to Düsseldorf, which had a more wide-ranging collection of Old Masters.
