About the workThe Dutch painter Simon Kick specialised in depicting soldiers as well as interior views and portraits. This painting features a lady looking in the mirror. Her reverie makes us wonder what she is thinking about. Her gestures seem to indicate that she is pregnant. The act of dressing could refer to the transition between different stages of life. At the same time, mirrors were a very common motif during this period, alluding to vanity and the transience of everything earthly.
