Sheet dimensions36,9 × 71,7 cm
About the workThe Japanese term "ukiyo-e" means "pictures of the floating world" and refers to woodcuts and paintings that often depict everyday scenes. Tradition and progress come together in this visual world, as this woodcut demonstrates. The picture depicts the Chrysanthemum Festival, which was once celebrated only in court circles. From the seventeenth century onwards, in the wake of social change in Japan, it was also celebrated by craftsmen, merchants and farmers.
