About the workAlthough it was difficult for women artists in the Weimar Republic, the sculptor Renée Sintenis succeeded in making a name for herself with her small sculptures. The animal world was her primary source of motifs. Infected by the sporting enthusiasm of the 1920s, dance, boxing and running also found their way into her oeuvre. Whether creating human or animal sculptures, the precise observation of body and movement was always followed by the free modelling of what she saw. Sintenis’ best-known work is the Berlinale Bear, which is awarded as part of the Berlin Film Festival.
