About the workIn this two-part work, the sculptor and multimedia artist Mounir Fatmi has given concrete form to an excerpt from the first surah (chapter) of the Qur’an, “Al-Fatiha” (The Opening), by arranging it ornamentally in Arabic script. The circular representation is reminiscent of the Islamic prayer ritual, which is performed in a fixed daily rhythm. Fatmi’s works explore cultural traditions in a globalised society and particularly focus on the relationship to that which is supposedly outside one’s own culture.
