About the workEmpty packaging usually ends up in the bin. Winfred Gaul, however, transformed it into a painting surface. From 1981 onwards, he used all kinds of discarded materials in his ongoing series Recycling. In this piece, for instance, he used corrugated cardboard that had already served its everyday purpose. The alternation of narrow and wide as well as smooth and dynamically painted surfaces recalls the composition of Gaul’s multipart colour field paintings. The act of reworking and transforming material into something new is evident here in two ways – in the support and in the motif.
