About the workGlass houses – this vision became reality in the 1910s. Glass bricks had already existed in isolated cases since the early nineteenth century. It was not until the automation of production at the beginning of the twentieth century that mass manufacturing became possible. This brick was patented in 1931, but it had already been used in a church building designed by the architect Hendrik P. Berlage in The Hague sometime between 1925 and 1927. Its shape was intended to allow for the easy replacement of individual bricks if a wall became damaged. The material also lends itself to a vibrant colour scheme.
