About the workThe French artist René Magritte is known for images that transform the everyday into the fantastical or even unsettling. “The Indiscreet Jewels” is an early lithograph that was produced in 1963 as a supplement for the magazine “XX Siècle”. Magritte based the title on the mid-eighteenth-century novel of the same name by the philosopher Denis Diderot. In it, a magic ring makes “indiscreet jewels” – a euphemism for vaginas – talk. Rather than a bracelet, Magritte has added a face to this person’s forearm.
