About the workAt just 20 years old, the artist Otto Grashof painted a portrait of his parents in an arbour in their Cologne apartment – perhaps as a gift. His mother is busy with needlework, in keeping with traditional gender roles of the time. In contrast, his father – a reformer of the Cologne school system – is depicted as a prominent member of society. He is holding a letter from King Friedrich Wilhelm III addressed to “dear Grashof”. Otto Grashof added many details to the painting: his signature, for example, appears to have been carved into the backrest of the chair.
