on display, room Das fünfte Element. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workIn 1965, HAP Grieshaber designed a monumental artwork for the Bonn Opera House. The mural, measuring 3 x 13 metres, is composed of repurposed, large-format printing blocks. It depicts scenes inspired by one of Europe's most important rivers: the Rhine. To mark the ceremonial inauguration of this work, a small-format woodcut series was also created and published as part of a portfolio by the Cologne gallery Der Spiegel. In it, Grieshaber addressed the river's complexity and mutability as a reflection of social conditions, as a landscape of great beauty, as a force of nature, but also as a place of longing in legends and stories.
