on display, room 010.1 About the workDrawing the plaster casts of ancient statues was considered an important discipline for students at the art academies. This cast of the “Borghese Gladiator” was one of the most popular models at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the nineteenth century. The original marble statue from Roman times was excavated near Rome in 1610. In the wake of the enthusiasm for antiquity that was kindled in the fifteenth century, the statue became one of the most admired and copied works. Even today, numerous replicas decorate European castles and gardens.
