About the workThe wood carver deliberately refrained from adding colour to the figure. Similar to Tilman Riemenschneider and other southern German sculptors of the same period, he incorporated the structure of the wood into the design instead. Saint Margaret is portrayed here as a young and pure noblewoman. Her father, a pagan priest, denounced her for converting to the Christian faith, which led to her being put on trial. In prison she endured the agony of torture, but the legend states that her wounds healed again and again. She was eventually beheaded.
