on display, room 003 About the workThe risen Christ is naked, his muscle and sinew taut in the interplay of light and shadow. The Florentine sculptor and architect Taddeo Landini created this bronze statue in imitation of Michelangelo’s “Risen Christ” (around 1520) from the Roman church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. At the time, depicting Jesus naked in the form of an ancient god was a provocation. The figure testifies to the emancipation from religious commissions and the liberation of artistic expression; it speaks directly to the senses and draws attention to the artist’s skill. The sculpture remained extremely popular among artists until the eighteenth century and was often copied.
