About the workInspired by the shape of the rare nautilus shell found in the Pacific Ocean, the silversmith Georg Rill designed this splendid silver vessel. Sculpted courtiers form the stem and the top. Goblets of this kind were part of courtly dining culture and were popular gifts for official and private occasions. Following the rise of the Fugger merchant family, who were active in the trade of silver and other goods, the art of gold- and silversmithing in Augsburg became internationally renowned from the sixteenth century onwards.
