About the workBorn in Düsseldorf, Peter Brüning studied under the abstract painter Willi Baumeister at the art academy in Stuttgart from 1950 to 1952. In 1964, his discovery of cartography – the study of the technical production of maps – marked a turning point in his oeuvre. He incorporated symbolic abbreviations for meadows, bodies of water and roads into his pictorial language as a way of reinterpreting a traditional artistic theme: the landscape. His works were not about deciphering signs but rather telling stories about the conflict between nature and civilisation.
