About the workThe simple robe and lack of elaborate decoration indicate that the patron who commissioned this small figure came from the lower nobility. In these circles, depictions of the Madonna did not feature majestic symbols such as sceptres or intricate crowns, since they did not seem appropriate for private chapels or rural parishes. The style and clothing of the Mother of God reflect characteristics of the feminine ideal during the High Middle Ages: she resembles a noblewoman from the age of chivalry.
