About the workThis woodcut of an embryonic-looking black form against a yellow background was included in the 1965 text collection “Ultimistischer Almanach” (Ultimist Almanac). Ultimism had its origins in the Gruppe der Vier + 4, a Berlin literary circle founded in 1957. The group saw itself as a successor to Dadaism, which Hans Arp had founded with five other writers in Zurich in 1916. Dada used satire to challenge the artistic, political and moral values of the era. As a post-war generation and in anticipation of another, final war, the Ultimists strove for “ars ultima” – ultimate art.
