About the workBorn in Bottrop, Josef Albers studied at the Bauhaus before teaching there until it was closed by the National Socialists. He fled to the USA in 1933, where he continued to explore the effects of colour. After emigrating, Albers taught at Black Mountain College in North Carolina and at Yale University. From 1950, the main subject of his paintings and prints were three or four nested squares in as many colours, which he used to explore the interaction between neighbouring fields of colour.
