About the workIn 1923, Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, a wood sculptor at the Bauhaus, designed children’s furniture for the school’s model house as well as this shipbuilding game consisting of 22 colourfully painted wooden pieces. With this building set, she succeeded in developing an open play system in which the child is free to decide what they want to build. Siedhoff-Buscher was far ahead of her time with this educational concept. Despite this, she left the Bauhaus in 1927 because its director, Walter Gropius, was not prepared to continue supporting her work after the birth of her first child.
