on display, room 037This armchair by the Berlin designer and artist Herman Waldenburg is characterised by subtle wit and a wealth of allusions. Based on the tradition of found objects, in which found everyday items are declared to be art, he uses sheet metal, foam and shock absorber springs to create a piece of furniture in which the sitting experience varies between rocking- and free-swinging chair. Under the slogan ‘New German Design’, provocative furniture was created in the 1980s with the aim of questioning and reorganising established design patterns.
