About the workMadonna and child turn lovingly towards each other. Mary leans to the side, an artistic innovation in the Gothic period that enables the infant Jesus to commune with her. The softly flowing folds of the robe and the slender figure characterise the courtly style. Originally, the cloak and robe were painted in stately blue and red with gold ornamentation, as evidenced by the remnants of pigment. The group can be traced back to models from thirteenth-century France. It can therefore be assumed that this figure, like others from the time, once stood at the centre of a cathedral portal depicting the Virgin Mary.
