About the workThe image of the Mother of God changed over the centuries. Her smile and Christ’s childlike features make this depiction welcoming and approachable. Although the now lost symbols of sovereign majesty – the crown and sceptre – were retained, they no longer served as symbols of distance and severity. The seemingly elongated central section of the figures is explained by their original location, probably a high altar. Details indicate that this sculpture was created by the Master of Erminold from Regensburg, whose name is derived from his most significant work, the tomb of the abbot Erminold.
