About the workThe scene shows the conversion of the Jew Saul, who had followers of Jesus persecuted. At the gates of Damascus, he experienced a vision of Jesus Christ that not only caused him to fall from his horse, but also signalled a radical turning point in his life. He changed his name to apostel Paul and from then on dedicated all his work to preaching the Christian religion. This detailed work was created by the fine carver Ignatz Elhafen, whom the art-loving Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz brought to the Düsseldorf court in 1704.
