About the workThe swastika on the chest of the gasping figure of Goliath in this fight scene makes it clear where the artist’s sympathy lies. Jacques Lipchitz brought the story of David and Goliath from the Jewish Torah into his present in order to take a stand against the rise of fascism. He kept this plaster version in his possession all his life. The Jacques and Yulla Lipchitz Foundation donated it to the Kunstpalast in 2013 – a gesture that cannot be appreciated highly enough in view of the antisemitism currently being witnessed in many parts of Germany.
