About the work
This precious letter box, which also contains a small secret compartment with a signed false bottom, was probably created as a gift. It comes from the workshop that Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (1658-1716) established in Düsseldorf for the design of elaborate furniture. Some of the most important cabinetmakers there belonged to the Lautenschein family, who made furnishings using the Boulle technique. In this design method, sheets of brass and tortoiseshell are carved out and joined together to form intricate ornaments. The practice is named after the cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732), who worked for the French King Louis XIV.
