About the workIn the Middle Ages, there were only a few types of furniture. Among the most important were chests, which were used to store linen, clothing or crockery. This simply designed chest was probably part of the furnishings of a monastery or the sacristy of a church. This is indicated by the sibyls depicted in the pointed arches. These prophetesses from Greek mythology were regarded in medieval Christianity as heralds of the Second Coming of Christ.
