About the workWith its basic shapes (triangle, square, circle) and the use of the three primary colours (yellow, red, blue), this cradle is one of the icons of the Bauhaus era. The painter, designer and interior architect Peter Keler developed it as part of an ensemble for a furniture competition organised by the Bauhaus teacher Walter Gropius. Entrants had to design different beds for women, men and infants. Keler’s bed for women was characterised by circular head and foot elements, while the bed for me was rectangular. The cradle, which was the only piece of furniture from the series to later go into production, complemented the two beds with its triangular shape.
