About the workWith his magnum opus "The Divine Comedy", the Florentine Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is considered one of the most important writers and philosophers of the Middle Ages. He is also celebrated as the founder of the Italian language. In the 19th century, there was a revived interest in this period in art and the rediscovery of Dante's literary work. Numerous paintings and sculptures were created in honour of the poet, such as this bust, which shows him with his typical red academic headdress and scholarly clothing. This portrait could be modelled on a bronze bust by the Swiss sculptor Vincenzo Vela from 1858.
