About the workChildren have often been portrayed naked or barely clothed in sculptures and paintings since antiquity. Because of their innocent-seeming appearance, these “putti” often served decorative purposes, namely as childlike erotic figures in love scenes or as angelic beings in Christian art. This sculpture by the carver Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer may also have been part of a figure ensemble, or it may have been displayed as a single figure in a church, like his world-famous “Honigschlecker” in the pilgrimage church at Birnau on Lake Constance.
