About the workIn the Middle Ages, important documents such as purchase contracts or notarial deeds were kept in small chests like this one with its roof-shaped lid and forged iron lock fittings. The box itself is made of wood and covered with leather, which was first warmed in linseed oil or liquid wax. The desired pattern was then embossed into the surface by pushing metal pins of various sizes into it from behind. This technique was not only used for boxes, but also for larger chests and other containers.
