About the workGeorge Minne has reduced the depiction of a praying woman to her head and hands. Introverted, with a lowered gaze, the figure conveys a feeling of devotion and mourning, which is reinforced by the sculpture’s contained silhouette. Against the backdrop of late nineteenth-century industrialisation, Minne addresses the sense of human helplessness in the face of increasing social hardship. At the Cologne Sonderbund exhibition in 1912, the work was presented under the title “Betende Nonne” (Praying Nun) or “Gebet” (Prayer) and was acquired the following year by the city of Düsseldorf for its newly founded museum in 1913.
