not on displayThis small bronze statue is part of an early work group by the sculptor Gustav Hermann Blaeser, which he created when he was studying in the studio of the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch in Berlin. It depicts the painter Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow, who headed the Düsseldorf KunstAkademie from 1826 to 1859 and developed the Düsseldorf School of Painting into one of Europe’s leading art schools. Blaeser, who was also from Düsseldorf and knew Schadow well, shows him in the role of teacher and contemplative artist. In doing so, he pays tribute to him not only as a painter, but also as an organiser and the intellectual heart of the Academy.
