About the workAncient depictions of Venus bathing served as the creative inspiration for this early sculpture by Johann Gottfried Schadow. He does not present an aloof goddess, however, but rather a young woman preparing to take a bath. Her slightly lowered head, the modest gesture of covering her breasts and testing the temperature of the water convey sensitivity and intimacy. Schadow later achieved fame as the court sculptor of the Prussian King Frederick William II with the quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
