About the workPaintings of Dutch villages, rivers and beaches decorate the drawers and inside the lids of this cabinet, which originally stood on a table-like base. The landscape motifs suggest that this piece of furniture originated in the south of the Netherlands. The column-framed central section with chequerboard design has a mirror on the back that may have allowed a full view of a small sculpture. Wealthy citizens and aristocrats commissioned elaborately designed cabinets such as these to symbolise their appreciation of art. They were used to store precious objects, collections or documents.
