About the workThis type of ship corresponds to the so-called East Indiaman: these were the large merchant ships of the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, which maintained trading posts in India, modern-day Indonesia and South Africa. The purpose of this miniature three-masted ship is unclear, but it was not uncommon for such vessels to be collected in larger and smaller versions by ship owners or captains and displayed as decorative ornaments. They remained very popular until the nineteenth century.
