About the work“Saint Mary of Victory” stands elegantly on a globe. Missing from the child’s left hand is the lance that once pierced the head of the serpent at Mary’s feet as a symbol of victory over sin. The depiction focuses on Mary’s involvement in the redemption of humankind brought about by the sacrificial death of Jesus, according to Christian beliefs. The figure dates from the period following the death of Elector Johann Wilhelm (d. 1716) and the relocation of the court to Mannheim. Like most other court artists, the 72-year-old Gabriel Grupello had been dismissed, but he continued to work in Düsseldorf for a few years more.
