This bronze figure depicts the Trojan prince Paris. According to Greek mythology, he was asked to decide which of three goddesses was the most beautiful. He awarded the golden apple to Aphrodite. In return, she promised him the love of the beautiful Helen, even though she was already married to the King of Troy. The abduction of Helen led to the outbreak of the Trojan War. From the 16th century onwards, Paris was also interpreted as the biblical Adam. The connection lies in the choice between desire and reason: Adam accepted the apple from Eve and thereby disobeyed God’s command.
