About the workThis Madonna and child belongs to a group of works that epitomise the “Beautiful Madonnas”. Mary’s outer appearance, which radiates grace and youthful loveliness, is the “beautiful” sign of her innocence and purity. Sculptures of this kind were mainly created in the courtly artistic centres of Central Europe, with Bohemia and Salzburg playing a predominant role in the early fifteenth century. Painted cast stone had been used to create full-round figures since antiquity; it consisted of fine marble powder and limestone.
