About the workAs demonstrated by this wall clock, the work of the architect and designer Peter Behrens is characterised by forms that are reduced and suited to their materials. This contrasts with the imitations of historical styles that were common at the time. As director of the School of Applied Arts in Düsseldorf between 1903 and 1907, Behrens had advocated for a fundamental reform in how design was taught and practised. In 1911, the Mannesmann headquarters on the Rhine promenade was constructed according to his plans; at this point, it was one of the most modern office buildings in Europe.
